The Mechanics of 0DTE Options

0DTE options are standard options contracts with one key difference: they expire today. This creates unique pricing dynamics that differ significantly from longer-dated options.

Pricing Dynamics

Time Value (Extrinsic)

With zero days left, time value is minimal. An OTM 0DTE option has very little extrinsic value, meaning it’s priced almost entirely on the probability of finishing ITM.

Intrinsic Value

If an option is ITM, its intrinsic value is simply the difference between the underlying price and the strike price.

Implied Volatility

IV still affects 0DTE pricing, but its impact is compressed. A 1% move in IV has less effect on a 0DTE option than a 30-day option.

Delta

Ranges from 0 to 1 (calls) or 0 to -1 (puts). ATM options have approximately 0.50 delta. Delta also approximates the probability of finishing ITM.

Gamma

Highest for ATM options near expiration. This means 0DTE options are extremely sensitive to price changes in the underlying.

Theta

Massive time decay. ATM 0DTE options can lose 30-50% of their value in a few hours.

Vega

Lowest impact — with no time left, volatility changes have minimal effect on price.

When 0DTE Options Trade

  • SPX 0DTE: Available every trading day (Mon-Fri)
  • SPY 0DTE: Available every trading day
  • Individual stock 0DTE: Only on expiration days (typically Fridays)
